Dunhill Delight - The Laughing Links!

As a world-class Dunhill professional tournament took place on the Old Course for the 33rd consecutive year, Charles McLaughlin was there to witness a nail-biting finish and an Asian team win. He also took time out from the action on the links to look into the history of this great event, why it’s so popular and the impact of the charitable donations directed by the Alfred Dunhill Links foundation

When Neil played the Dunhill in 2013, he was paired with Peter Uihlein - who lost in a play-off that year - including shooting a stunning 60 on the second day of the tournament.

Uihlein later personally donated funds to help Bradley’s career, and the Dunhill has clearly been a major influence on his golfing career. “It’s just such a fantastic, fun experience. In 2013, I was standing on the 10th tee of the Old Course with Peter and Reteif Goosen, and the crowd were cheering because Andy Garcia was playing keepie-uppie and balancing golf balls on his nose!”

The impact on St Andrews University was explained by Director of Development Robert Fleming, no stranger to Hong Kong. We first met in 2014, when Robert visited to set up an alumni association in the city and he has been over every year since.

“The funds from the Foundation are critical in allowing us to fund post-graduate research that otherwise wouldn’t be undertaken.” The aim was to use the funds to expand and improve the research capacity, which in turn enhances the status of the university and helps assure its future.

Finally, we spent some time with Grant Hepburn, CEO of Golf RSA, who runs the South African Golf Development Board. Grant walked us through the incredible expansion of the programs taking place all over South Africa and the life-changing impact the programs have on those selected to participate. In addition, there are several joint initiatives with Scottish Golf and kids from both countries gain experience playing overseas.

All in all, a fantastic event beloved by participants and viewers alike, and directly benefitting a range of worthy causes. What more can you ask for? Roll on 2019!
