Andreas Binder Interview

The President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong talks to Alex Jenkins about the German automaker’s partnership with the Hong Kong Golf Association

Binder in action during the MercedesTrophy Hong Kong qualifier

How did Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong use golf prior to the HKGA partnership?

In Hong Kong, we have held the MercedesTrophy for seven years running and it was a highlight on the Hong Kong golf calendar even before our partnership with the HKGA. MercedesTrophy is now a global tournament staged in over 60 countries with 60,000 participants every year - and over the years nearly a million customers and fans of the brand have teed off during the tournament. The winners from the MercedesTrophy Hong Kong compete in the MercedesTrophy Asian Final in Gold Coast, Australia where the highest scorer in the team advances to represent Hong Kong in the World Final, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Since teaming up with the HKGA, we can promote the MercedesTrophy to the golf community beyond our own customers to create opportunities for amateur golfers in Hong Kong to see what Mercedes-Benz does for the golf community.

As far as Mercedes-Benz’s sponsorship of professional sports events and players go, are there any further plans to expand this in Asia?

Absolutely. Mercedes-Benz has been a strong supporter to the golf community in Asia for more than 25 years and golf is a very important platform for us. We are always looking for new ways of supporting the sport both on amateur and professional levels not only in Asia but also on other continents.

How impressed are you by the standard of amateur golf in Hong Kong?

I am very impressed with both the golf courses and the high standard of the players in Hong Kong. The passion of the golfers in Hong Kong is very high and there is a big community sharing their passion for the sport. Also the weather conditions in Hong Kong are excellent for golf and make the golf season very long compared to other parts of the world. It would be good however if there would be more opportunities to practice the game and for the golf players to enjoy this wonderful game in Hong Kong.
