Willett the Winner after One Wild Week

On the 20th anniversary of Nick Faldo’s amazing comeback over Greg Norman to win his third Green Jacket, another Englishman took advantage of a Masters meltdown to claim his first

Willett joins Nick Faldo as the only Englishmen to win the Masters. Faldo won three times, in 1989, 1990 and 1996. Scotland’s Sandy Lyle won the Masters in 1988.

Willett’s victory at Augusta National was similar in many ways to Faldo’s third victory. Faldo started the final round six strokes behind Greg Norman, reeled in the Australian and won by five shots – a swing of 11 strokes in the final round. Faldo shot 67, the same as Willett.

Willett started the final round at even par, three strokes behind Spieth. This time the swing was six shots in Willett’s favor.

“Every time we seemed to make ground, Jordan pulled ahead,” Willett said. “It all happened very, very quick, obviously. We went from behind to obviously two in front. It was just a very surreal day when you look back at the ebbs and flows.”

Willett said the thought of following in the footsteps of Faldo and Lyle is “fantastic.”

“They were great champions to win the Masters,” he said. “And I still can't believe I'm going to be in and amongst them. And in the Champions Locker Room. It really boggles me.”
