Pairings

The Irishman spent months analyzing partnerships to suit the course and the different formats. His choices of Henrik Stenson with Justin Rose, Graeme McDowell with Dubuisson, and Lee Westwood with Jamie Donaldson all reaped generous rewards. Arguably, his only mistake was pairing rookie Stephen Gallacher with out-of-form Ian Poulter.

Tweaking the Template

McGinley’s Ryder Cup experience as a player and vice-captain meant he had a fair idea of what worked. Compare this to Tom Watson, who hadn’t even visited a Ryder Cup since he captained the Americans to victory in 1993. McGinley’s knowledge of players and strategy proved invaluable.
