Recipe for Success

A Fifth Vice-Captain

McGinley was able to concentrate on formulating his plan of attack safe in the knowledge all matches were being monitored. He received vital feedback on all the foursomes and fourballs, while the fifth assistant was able to keep the unused players focused and upbeat.

Team Harmony

He left no stone unturned in his quest for team unity. Everything from Sir Alex Ferguson’s motivational speech down to the slogans adorning the walls of the team room had been meticulously planned. His decision to treat the caddies as frontline members of the team rather than backroom staff was roundly praised.

Two-Year Job

Since McGinley was announced as captain in January 2013, he threw everything he had at the job. The best example of this was flying out to the EurAsia Cup in Malaysia, specifically to get to know Victor Dubuisson. He did not rest until he knew exactly what made each team member tick.
