When Paul Dunne ended the third round at the top of the leader board alongside Louis Oosthuizen and Jason Day he became the first amateur since Bobby Jones 88 years previously to do so. Jones would go on to win The Open by two shots; Dunne wound up shooting 78 and finished in a share of 30th.

The 2015 edition of the tournament was the 144th time The Open has been played, with the Old Course at St Andrews hosting the championship on 29 occasions. The very first Open was played on 17 October 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club.
