It had been this many years since the last time The Open finished on a Monday. Seve Ballesteros won the 1988 Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes after firing a final-round 65 on the Monday after the course had been flooded during Saturday's third round.

Marc Leishman fought his way into the three-man play-off thanks to some fine iron-play and, crucially, his brilliant performance on the Old Course’s notoriously tricky greens. The Australia’s average of just 28 putts per round was the lowest of the tournament.
