Biodynamic wine: an effective form of viticulture or a crock of cowpat?

There might well be some truth in it. In 1997, the sales team of Corney & Barrow visited Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy. Anne-Claude Leflaive poured two blind wines and asked them which they preferred. Twelve out of the 13 preferred one in particular. But why? They were the same wine, Leflaive’s 1996 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon grown on adjacent plots of vines, one organic, the other biodynamic and it was the biodynamic wine that was almost unanimously the favourite. Now Domaine Leflaive is one of the most successful fully biodynamic producers. Biodynamic soils have been tested against non-organic soils and they showed greater disease suppression, a decrease in compaction and additional organic material to aid fertilization.

So whether you believe that a cow horn has magical powers to transform a particular harvest, or it’s a load of codswallop, it’s important to remember that ultimately, biodynamic farmers really care about their vines and are willing to spend more time and money on nurturing them through difficult seasons without resorting to pesticides and mechanical farming. Which is reason alone to drink.
