Final Shot with Justin Rose

Just days before winning the UBS Hong Kong Open, the 2013 US Open champion talked to Alex Jenkins at Fanling about his golfing heros, his favourite courses and why Casino Royale remains his favourite James Bond film

When did you first pick up a club?

My mum bought me my first set of plastic clubs when I was about two. I never put them down. I definitely had a passion for cracking the ball and chasing it and cracking it again. I’d be entertained for hours. Anytime a parent finds something that entertains their kids for hours, they’re pretty keen for them to keep doing it. My dad played a bigger role as I grew up and got distracted by other sports. But he obviously saw a talent there and nurtured it.

Who is your golfing hero?

Even for English kids, Seve [Ballesteros] was amazing. Obviously we had Nick Faldo to look up to, and Greg Norman and Nick Price. And when I was 13 or 14, Ernie Els was coming through. Today, I’d like to be Dustin Johnson. Just for a day!

What’s your longest drive?

When I’m using Trackman, I always look at my carry and my best is 308 [yards]. Conditions and run out, no idea.

Which is your favourite James Bond Film?

Casino Royale. They actually used some of the beach I live on to film some of it [in the Bahamas].

Which celebrity would you like to play a round with?

Golfers are lucky - tonnes of celebs love their golf, tonnes of sportsmen love their golf. One that is popping into my mind would be Justin Timberlake; he’s a pretty cool guy and obviously a namesake. He also loves his golf and even owns a golf course, so ... JT.
