Final Shot with Dominic Wall

The R&A’s Hong Kong-based director for the Asia-Pacific region talks to Alex Jenkins about how he was introduced to the game, his favourite courses and who he would have in his dream fourball

When did you start playing - and where?

I started playing golf at the age of 13 in Canberra, Australia, when I was introduced to the sport by an uncle. I soon joined the Federal Golf Club, an 18-hole championship courses set in a native Australian bush setting, and by the age of 17 was playing off a single figure handicap. I ended up playing pennant golf for Federal for over 10 years.

How often do you play?

I probably play 40 to 50 rounds per year, with some months more than others due to travel and work commitments. I'm also back in St Andrews every May ‎for about 10 days and try to play a round most evenings after work because it doesn't get dark there until very late. Although I do play a few 'work'-related rounds I very much enjoy playing the game so I can easily separate the golf from work!

What's been your best ever round?

Before attending university I took a year off and travelled around the United Kingdom with a backpack and a set of golf clubs. During the trip I managed to shoot level-par rounds on two courses that are synonymous with The Open - the Old Course at St Andrews and Turnberry. My best round recently was on the Jubilee Course at St Andrews last year. I managed to beat my boss, Peter Dawson, the chief executive of the R&A, on the 19th hole in our staff knock-out championship. Although I played well it may not have been a good career move!
