Matthew Cheung Aims at Professional Circuit

Louie Chan talks to Matthew Cheung, the only Hong Kong player and the only amateur to make the cut in 2018 HOMNA Hong Kong Open

Matthew Cheung

Louie Chan: It was a rough day for you in the final round…

Matthew Cheung: I was hitting balls in the morning. My hip flexor locked up, causing pain all over my body. I tried, but I couldn’t hit balls anymore. I stopped and went to see a Physio. They gave me some medicine, taped it up and stretched it out. I was just out there swing very defensively. I was afraid the pain would just come back. It was very difficult for me to play. Some of the shots I thought was good. I just couldn’t get any power into it like I normally do. Like my last shot on the 18th fairway, I hit it ok, but it was 10 yards short off the green.

LC: Have you had this kind of injury before?

MC: My back spam plays up a little bit all week. I have been seeing the Physio all week but nothing to this extent. I had two bulging discs before in my lower back a couple of years before. This stuff happens at the start of this year. But, it kind of went away. It just recurred at the wrong time.

LC: It’s a shame as you produced some sublime golf in the first two days…

MC: I was hitting the ball very well. I think I hit nine fairways on the first day, and then ten on the second day. That’s what you got to do here, you know. I hit a lot of good shots in the first round, but towards the end, got a little loose with my swing. I dropped a couple of shots coming in. Overall, I feel like there’re lots of positives can be taken out from the first two rounds. I made a really clutch birdie on the 17th of the second round. I holed a 50-foot putt there.
