HSBC Golf For Schools Programme

Initiative of the Year

It's not just been at the elite level where Hong Kong golf has made great strides. In its first full year of operation, the HSBC Golf For Schools programme, an initiative designed to develop grassroots golf, has seen more than 5,000 primary school children introduced to the game at ShortGolf demonstrations across the SAR. At the time of writing, 20 schools have signed up to the programme, which features a minimum of eight classes delivered to students by HKGA-trained golf professioinals.

For those students who complete their ShortGolf classes, the reward is a visit to a golf club in Hong Kong to receive their certificate of achievement. Highlights so far have included school trips to Discovery Bay Golf Club, The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club, the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course and The Hong Kong Golf Club by more than 300 children aged seven to 11.

Speaking at the launch of the HSBC Hong Kong Junior Golf Programme, Tom Phillips, CEO of the HKGA, said: “HSBC Golf For Schools is intended to be affordable and accessible for children of all backgrounds.  For those children who are inspired by the ShortGolf experience, we offer a pathway into the sport, starting with a series of coaching clinics at golf courses and driving ranges across Hong Kong.”
