Matthew Cheung in action during the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Clearwater Bay

Round of the Year

Matthew Cheung headed into the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Clearwater Bay full of confidence, which was understandable: he had enjoyed a solid season and was excited to be playing in one of the world's most prestigious amateur events on home turf and in front of familiar faces.

After struggling to a 71 in the first round, which he put down to poor ball-striking, Cheung was down but not out. After some time spent on the range, something clicked. The result? A scintillating 64 early on day two which lifted him well up the leader board and into early contention.

Cheung wasn't able to maintain that red-hot form in the third and what proved to be final round, but his six-under-par effort set the lowest round ever by a Hong Kong player at the Asia-Pacific Amateur – and thanks to the championship's global TV reach, earned him significant airtime in front of a considerable audience.

Winner: Matthew Cheung.
